My new Project

http://www.grotowski.net/en/encyclopedia/polish-thanatos-incantations

This  was the  project I was invited to participate in the end of 1980.During our workshop -1980 April to May  and before I leave to Athens again  in July  Zbigniew  proposed me  and I wanted to see possibilities of coming back and work with them. -We were working with Zbigniew on  the elements of Thanatos ( Death) during the workshop. I did not know that  they were thinking of a project on this, but the item  of thanatos was main at our  improvisations.  Thanatos is the Greek word for death. My notes from that time  on this subject are very interesting. Now I want to come back after so many years and create a piece on thanatos. Dedicated to Jergy, Ryszard,  Zbigniew, to Stanislaw and Antoni .The main character of the performance is Gertrude Bell.An other tragic personae Text by documentary, bibliography and By the writer Poly Hatzimanolaki  and Persian poetry.

The final performance took place in Wrocław on 11 May 1980.

                           Apocalypsis cum figuris

The final performance took place in Wrocław on 11 May 1980. Although for the vast majority of witnesses, watching Apocalypsis cum Figuris was a harrowing experience which changed not only their concepts of theatre, but indeed their lives – there was also a not insignificant number of critics and spectators who considered the performance blasphemous and menacing. These were primarily, although not only, people connected to the Catholic Church (including Zbigniew Raszewski and Andrzej Kijowski). The most notorious example of criticism from this milieu was a fragment of a sermon pronounced during celebrations of St. Stanisław on 8 May 1976 at the Skałka sanctuary in Kraków by the primate of the Catholic Church in Poland, Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński. He considered Apocalypsis cum Figuris one of the works of art that were demoralising the nation and destroying its ethical spine to the same extent as drinking. Among the many descriptions ofApocalypsis, Grotowski held in the highest esteem those by Konstanty Puzyna, who interpreted the piece as type of blasphemous ‘return of Christ’. Noteworthy, too, are Małgorzata Dzieduszycka’s detailed textual reconstruction of the performance and Jennifer Kumiega’s description. We get some idea of the work thanks to numerous photographs, sound recordings and also a film version directed by Ermanno Olmi for Italian television in 1979. Outside the theatre’s home, the performance was presented in London (18–22 September 1969), New York (18–26 November and 10–15 December 1969), Holstebro (26 August – 12 September 1971), Warsaw 22 September – 10 October 1971, Munich (22 August – 4 September 1972), Philadelphia (10–25 September 1973), Paris (12–18 November 1973), Sydney (4 April – 18 May 1974), Venice (as part of the Biennale, 27–29 September, 3–5 October, 9–12 October, 15–17 October, 20–22 October, 25–27 October 1975), Gdańsk (6–18 October 1978), Milan (27, 28, 31 January, 1, 4, 5 February 1979), Pontedera (24–25 and 29–30 June 1979), Rome (4–7 December 1979), and Genoa (18–20, 22 and 23 January). As part of the Pół wieku po Reducie (Half a century after Reduta) project, Apocalypsis was presented in Lublin (16–17 October 1979), Łódź (20–22 October 1979), Rawicz (2 March 1980), Poznań (8–10 March 1980), Toruń (12–14 March 1980) and Tarnobrzeg (21–22 March 1980).

TREE OF PEOPLE

There are so many thoughts to refer and elements to describe and I would like to discuss, concerning  the 'Tree of People'. I will write down my own experiences attempting  the two Tree of People projects and I will list material, documentary and conversations from this project, that had make the first appearance at 1979. I was following the project one year after April 1980. The workshop  I was invited to participate, was after that and part of the project.

The poster of Tree of People. I have to say so many about it.   When I sawv it  I wanted so much to have it  and when I went back to Athens I took it with me. I keep it until now and it is one of my precious theatre objects.

The 'Tree of People' was my first contact with the wotk of Grotowski. It was also  my first trip to Poland.

About my arrival  to  the laboratory is a very strong memory and I will talk about it later as  it needs  a special chapter. The second strong  impulse  was the introduction of the project. A strange introduction at that time for me.   If as I was entered in a theatre in which the performance  was our possibilities to understand  a  new way of communication, the stage a building  and actors all these young people from  all the world that  we were coming  to share, to learn, to see to unfderstand, to explore to  satisfyte our  curiosity.

Exploring time, ideas and people

Wroclaw  1980  Entering  INSTITUT AKTORA LABORATORIUM

My coming was  late evening, directly from the airport of Wroclaw and tired cause we arrived in Warsaw first, waiting some time  at this airport  and then,  fly to Wroclaw.
My memories from this day is little misty  as the weather was dark and cold. It was  as I traveled  to an other world, maybe cause  it was the first time traveling to a socialist country and also I had not idea about politics. So I was impressed from the atmosphere  from the first moment. Even the airplane of the Polish airlines was strange to me.  I  had   travelled a lot until that date. Europe, Asia and Africa. But Poland was exceptional in beauty and in many other sides that I will write about later, interesting and  irritant.
The  excitement was so strong and I had not  the  cool mind to hold dairy immediately, or to take pics or to keep notes. About the pics I  have to say that the Laboratory did, not like pics so a I kept this note in mind during  all  my trip – I criticize  negatively this decision now- and because  of some American friends, I have some pics at least of the teachers and from my self also few people from the five days session, before we were separated.
I was interesting only about the case. I was there! I wanted to stay, to follow the work, to be one of the 6 people that would remain to participate to the workshop until, July.

The process was like this. We arrived participants from  all over the world, all of us eighty( 80) and under directly  from our arrival, to the project  ‘ the tree of  people’  then follows the  give (5 )days session.
After that was the day of final the decision. Who will stay, who  will go  ?   The number of people to stay  was  six(6)    for the workshop until, July.
the day of the decision ws along   duration meeting from 11:00  in the morning to early night in which,  the teachers  explain with  enormous patience and accuracy  and   thoroughness,  why they keep these people and not the others.  A very sensitive difficult and  precious moments.
We  were 80  young people from  eighteen to 35 years  old, so you can imagine how long was  the meeting and how important and how sad too. All these days we were together work hours together share  experience learn from each other. Yes we wanted to be the lucky people that will stay but also as we were young we had pure emotions, we become friends with some people so we had to be in the end only 6
( we stay to follow the workshop 9 people ).

This meeting  was  a huge lesson for me. I  did not find again  the clearness’ to talk to others with so sincere and direct way  except  to my own group when some years after we begin to work. Out of my  group also it was  tremendous difficult  to approach  the work with collaborators and students with this way.

It is it was and wit will be the most difficult part of communication. How to see, to recognize  and  to experience with sincerity, knowledge and directedness, your opinion and your   adeptness.

I wanted to be from the people will remain. All of us wanted this.   This was my purpose  and or his I came from Athens leaving my son a way  from  me. That means that this trip to JERZY GROTOWSKI  Laboratorium  was more important than anything else at that moment. I was  an actress  in my first professional year, with long studies in Dance,Theatre, Body Movement and already a mother.
